Spore.com has received a major update today to prepare for the release of the Creature Creator this week.

On the site now is a lot more information about the game, plus an order link for the Creature Creator and full games, as well as a “Coming Soon” page for the trial version of the Creature Creator.

Perhaps most interesting is the Sporepedia page, where you can already see creatures from the Maxis staff appearing. Click here to see all the creatures currently on the Sporepedia. At the time of this writing there was 118 creatures. Let us know in the comments if more are continuing to appear!

You can link to creatures in the Sporepedia already, so if you find anything particularly cool, feel free to share the links in the comments section.

Melusine, by MaxisKate, looks pretty unusual. It seems to look almost mermaid like, only without the attractive human upper section! However the reason I am linking to it is that it’s an example of the ratings system in action. At the time I write this, Melusine is rated with a “disgusted” red face.

Death in Fuschia, by MaxisDangerousYams, is rated with a very happy green face, by way of comparison. The creature itself is also quite a sight to behold!

Another interesting creation is Floralei, by MaxisSarah. I remember some folks being concerned a while back that it would be impossible to create plant-like creatures. While you still can’t evolve from a tree, it seems you can certainly look like a shrubbery! Or a Bouquet!

Honestly, I could probably link you to creatures all day, but I’ll leave it there.

The Sporepedia also has this tip running along the side of the screen:

How do you see one of these Creatures in your Spore Creature Creator? Right Click on the thumbnail image of the creature. Save the image to your desktop. Drag the saved image from your desktop into the Spore Creature Creator. Voila! The Creature is in your game.

Not sure how that will work if you’re planning on running the Creature Creator or complete game in fullscreen mode, but presumably it will become more apparent once we get our hands on the game.

As well as the Sporepedia being up and running, profile pages for creators are also now available. An example is MaxisCasey’s page, where you can see an assortment of their creatures, their most popular creation and a variety of statistics related to their time in the game.

Interestingly there appears to be a “widget” in the upper right of the profile screen, with clickable thumbnails being displayed. The size on the Spore.com profile page seems well suited to embedding in Facebook, but hopefully they will also have a few smaller sizes for use on other websites.

If you’re not already on the new website poking around, what are you waiting for, get going! And come back to tell us what you found and what you liked most.
