For those who didn’t read the introductory post, part of what I’m hoping to do here on Spore Daily is give people a nudge in the creativity department by setting weekly challenges for people to try.

These challenges are meant to be the fun kind of challenge, not the gruelling “Climb Mt Everest” kind. And it’s not a competition, either. But even if it was, there would still be no prizes. Sorry, all my money is invested in cookies.

Think of the challenge as more of a “prompt”, as some fiction writing circles are known to do some times. Someone comes up with a theme, or an idea, or a setting and writers can then fill in the blanks, as it were.

In this instance, it will be some kind of guideline to follow when creating your creature.

For the first challenge, I thought I would try and keep it fairly loose and unspecific, rather than tie too many details down, like specific colour schemes or specific creature parts or dietary habits.

Challenge #1:

Create an “Odds or Evens” creature.

If you choose Odds: You may only use an odd number of any particular part. So if your creature has eyes, it must have 1, 3, 5, 7… etc. It may not have an even number of any body part, including limbs.

If you choose Evens: You may only use an even number of any particular part. This includes mouths! Although you only have to have 1 torso, since there’s no way to make two.

Entries should be enclosed in a stamped, self addressed envelope… No, wait, you can submit your creations in the comments area for everyone to look at. Post either the link to the creature on the Sporepedia or, if you have your own site, feel free to link to its location there.

My “Odds and Evens” creature will be posted next Friday, prior to next week’s Challenge. However there is technically no time limit on this. Time limits aren’t fun!

Just for the fun of it I made a one for odds too, everything ended up with 3's in fact, though that was just chance by the design. The mouth/s on the top are actually 3 of the same. Using the secret tab key you can usually bring up a couple of extra rotation circles. This doesn't work for feet though, its just a way for fine tuning anything that has the facing circle I am guessing.

This one SHOULD work, just like the last one should have worked though...

  • That one does. Though I kind of wish it didn't, that's one freaky looking creature! ;)
  • Seem to have posted the wrong link, that's a link to a list of your creatures. :)

I've been thinking of an odd-footed creature for a couple of days, so here's my entry. Originally wanted to do a 5-footed beast, hadn't seen any of those, but didn't work out too well. But that is where Triwiskulus was born: one-foot may seem like an evolutionary disadvantage, but with his whipwick 'whiskas' giving it some sneak bonus, and the wings to help with balance and as a rudder in flight (5-total) to escape the fight if it's not going too well. That is where the hockitlauncher on the tail comes in handy when fleeing: it just uses stalkgazer on the back to sight the foe and 'pitoo-ee'.

    5x stalkgazer, 5x antisoptera, 1x phatella, 3x whipwick, 1x terrorpin, 1x hockitlauncher
  • My "Headrian" creature has 5 feet! :)
Twiwiskulus looks very goofily cool. Think he'd be fun to play in the proper game, hopping around and stuff!

I went with odds. Here is Spinder:

I wanted to try for as much symmetry as I could get with odd numbers. The part count is 1 mouth, 5 eyes, 5 limbs, 5 feet, 15 armor plates, and 1 Gemstone doodad. The toughest part was watching the complexity meter, although I wish there were a way to rotate the feet so they all pointed inward.

You did well with the concept of your creature, I have thought about doing soemthing similar before but never got around to it. With 5 limbs it looks really good, perhaps the ideal number. I agree with the foot rotation though, particularly those feet, its annoyed me a few times already. Kudos for stepping up to the odds side of the challenge.
  • I love the way you've done Spinder's legs. I tried something similar in the Trial and gave up in frustration. ;)
Feet rotation would be useful, yes. I guess it was some kind of technical issue that stopped it being added. Your creature looks good with them angled outwards though!

I chose evens. While it can be pretty easy to do by just adding a mouth, I didn't want to make something with odds just because I haven't been too fond of the way they turn out for me. I thought about doing the two torso thing that you can sort of do, but I get a ton of clipping problems with those, but more importantly you hit complexity limits very quickly and mostly from redundancy. To keep true to the challeng and not just simply make a normal creature and add and extra mouth I kept evens in mind for the digits on an individual hand/foot, and also, put a centered feature

  • Oh, very nice idea with the digits!
I like your creature, he has his hands ready to shovel food right into his bellymouth. :)
  • Here's my entry. As you may be able to tell, I chose evens. I also found a way (well, kind of) to have more than one torso. Unfortunately, while trying to essentially create two creatures connected at the head, I made my creature too complicated and couldn't change the hands or feet. So the Duotorsilians have to live with quite boring hands and feet.

  • Yeah, it's kind of two torsoes if you have a thin linking part in the middle, but it's still technically one, so I wanted to make sure people knew that was a legitimate exception to the guidelines.
    The Duotorsilians look great!
