The poisonous Red Bellied Crystal Spider Name: Red Bellied Crystal Spider

Description: The red bellied crystal spider stalks its prey swiftly and silently, often using the distinctive red and black crystalline landscapes of their homeworld as camoflage.

Statistics:
Abilities - Mating Call, Sneak (5), Sight (Lots of sight!)
Attack - Bite (3), Charge (5), Strike (1)
Socialize - Sing (1), Dance (4)
Speed - 5
Health - 40
Diet - Carnivore

Notes:
I really wanted this guy to be a spider - thus the eight legs, and the name - but when you see it walking around, it really isn’t. All the legs on one side of the body move at once, rather than the usual spider crawling motion. As a result the body has a bit of a bob and roll to it when moving. Definitely detracts from the creepiness.

I’m not 100% sold on the crystals down its back, and I think it’s the yellowing of them that’s doing it. There’s not meant to be any yellow in the creature and yet the crystals are. It’s a little annoying and may be cause for a revisit of the creature later on.

Also, this thing has nine eyes. Nine! There seems to be no advantage to having multiple eyes, but a spider with just two eyes wouldn’t look right.
They’ve also picked up a real evil red tint around the edges, which is nice!

This is the first creature I’ve had to include a background setting with which to record a video. If you want a black background for whatever reason, don’t make a black creature!

Don't get me wrong, overall I do like it. I noticed this one in the sporepedia before it was posted here and the first thing I noticed was the body being mostly like an unsegmented tube. This is where I stopped and made my own, not to go "See mine is better." but just to see how it went. Something that might be useful for you to know is that the detail lair seems to control the coloring on the crystals. There doesn't seem to be much you can do about the legs though, unless you make them look completely different, which defeats the purpose, and I always have problems with the bodies bending and flexing oddly as though they were water ballons or something, no ribs, thats my guess.

I have another creature it turns out, that doesn't have the same problem with walking. It also has 8 legs, but the difference is that its legs are two segments each, and not 3, while another with 4 legs and 3 segments to each also walks unlike the spiders.

Actually, it is somewhat segmented, just not hugely so. The extra weight makes it a bit more flabby so the flesh rolls around a little. Which might have looked better if the legs walked properly. ;)
I'll try your suggestion about the two segments for the legs and see if that fixes it, thanks for that! :)
Your spider looks cool too. And it's not like there aren't dozens of other spiders already on the Sporepedia anyway. ;)

Haha, yeah there are a lot of them in there. I was toying with the legs a little bit more. It seems its more a question of spacing than anything else, which is detrimental to making a spider look like a spider. I am supposing it has to do with the immense amount of collision they would be having so close to one another.

I actually tried spacing them out a little when I originally designed
the spider, but it continued to walk in the same fashion, so I went back
to not having legs on the abdomen. Makes it at least look spidery while
it's standing still!

I noticed something about the color of the crystals when I was messing around today with the legs, if you use the darkest black it interferes with their coloration.

i hate when i try to get my creature to walk around and it does not take real steps and just flips around a bunch then i spend a long time trying to fix it. or another bad thing is that you cant rotate feet

I got in and had a fiddle after reading this discussion. I could get 6-legs to walk like a spider, but not eight: didn't get adventurous with the segments. No matter how much I stretched the 8 legs around (both in length, and spaced around the body), they just kept walking one side alternate to the other.

Not meaning to jump on the spider bandwagon when I began, but I liked where the creature was going, so created the Ulna:

Oh well, I guess you cannot have too many spiders ;-)

The Ulna also has a problem with the 'jelly wobbles' at the front of the body, where the head is I guess. Certain animations and the mouth and eyes completely disappear inside the body. Seems like the animations aren't that rigid in terms of actual body proportions not matter what size or shape your creatures body is.
