Spore Daily #21: Tiny Head

Name: Tiny Head

Description: The Tiny Head tribes have been engaged in a course of selective breeding, self instituted, in an effort to increase the size of their heads.
Unfortunately thus far they have only had success at increasing the size of their bodies and have developed a number of nasty skin conditions as a side effect.

Abilities - Mating Call, Sight
Attack - Bite (3), Charge (2), Strike (1), Spit (1)
Socialize - Sing (4), Dance (4), Charm (5)
Speed - 2
Health - 40
Diet - Omnivore

Notes:
Originally this creature started as something else entirely, but then I had so much fun creating the tiny head I went and changed what I was doing.
And thus Tiny Head was born!

I deliberately chose some of the paint patterns from the third page of each section, since I so rarely use those ones. I’m not sure this is a “good” look, but it fits the story of how this creature came to be so I’m going to leave it alone.

Despite the semi-ugliness this creature rates very high on social abilities, making it a potential social animal. I guess beauty is only skin deep after all!

I've always thought of high social skills on ugly monsters to more intimidation based. I have one that has twice the social skill as attack or abilities and its modeled after a race that is very much known for not being socially polite and popular for their looks. Get your enemies to join your side just so you will stop singing, dancing, or reading terrible poetry to them.

Except when you do the "charm" action, it's still all cutesy!
But I suppose you could pretend that the cutesiness is actually that creatures "intimidating" style. It's just our limited perspective that makes it seem cute. :D

I read some posts on the www.spore.com forum yesterday about how most creatures are built to be huge or attack-oriented, thus perhaps leading to an 'unbalanced' ecosystem. I don't know about that, but it got me thinking of the size of creatures: one of my early attempts at a massive creature was Penteranadon, but I hadn't really thought up until yesterday about small creatures. muTorra and Critter were my attempts at creating very small creatures (shrinking limbs and parts to their smallest size). Interesting to see where on the timeline these three might be pulled into the Creature Phase of Spore (if at all ;-). I also had a laugh at the difference between the two smallest and Penteranodon :-D. Also if I was going to comment on the unbalancing of the ecosystem, then I would probably point out that the trial Spore-CC only has carnivore mouths, where it might have been better to have one carnivore, one herbivore (or omnivore) mouth.

I've seen some that don't look particularly huge or intended to be strong on offense or anything. It might be interesting to see the average "attack" style values versus the "socialise" values, though.
I think Elephantick was the only creature I created specifically to be really big. He looks kind of silly though. I usually just fiddle around and see what I can create, I'm not generally trying to make some killer beasty. :)

There shouldn't be any worry about a balanced ecosystem, it should take care of itself. Depending on the filters you have set you will be getting content from Maxis which will include at least the creatures that you already have of theirs in the editor. At any rate a creature won't be saved by having 20 points in its charm abilities if you are just going to ignore their attempts to charm as I am sure your competition may do if they have very little charm and massive attacks. As I heard in some of the videos/interviews before they will try to give you a balanced ecosystem where you are not always at the top and not always at the bottom either I would think. This is something that they are probably still working with from what I heard in one of the recent previews in the tribal stage. One last thing I feel like mentioning here is that there may be a possibility of encountering your more primitive self, though that is more a guess than anything else really.

Yeah, I don't think balancing of the ecosystem will be an issue, considering it is one of the key points Maxis have been re-iterating for a long while now. I also think right now there would be enough herbivore and omnivores in the Sporepedia to fill the particular ecosystem niche in the full game.

One thing I think is that there will be a difference between creatures designed and built in CC aesthetically and those that 'evolve' in the Creature Phase. The later particular would probably be designed in context of surviving or overcoming some of the top preditors (or defensive herbivores/omnivores) within the game, rather than solely just to look good.

Also, the creatures created in the regular game will be made only from those creature parts you find in that particular game, presumably. Unless you "unlock" them for all creatures when you first play through.

Hey just wondering if you were still doing Spore News on this site? I don't mean and disrespect, its just that I used to always come to this site for my Spore Gossip/Rumors/News, and now it just seems as though its your Creature Gallery. Has the focus changed or are you still doing news? Sorry, that may have come off as rude, but i didn't mean it to be, just curious is all.

As I explained in the introduction post ( http://www.sporedaily.com/2008/06/08/introducin... ) this site *IS* mostly for my little "a creature a day" project, not for general news. That was always my intention and that hasn't changed.

However the main reason you've not been seeing as much "news" is a combination of there just not being anything *that* interesting to post, plus I simply haven't been up to it. Mostly the latter.
As I said in the introductory post, if you want comprehensive news, this is probably not the site for you and you should try Spores Illustrated - http://spore.strategyplanet.gamespy.com/ - I'm not saying I won't be posting any news in the future (or even "shortly") but not to put too fine a point on it... it was never my intention to have this be a news site and I made that very clear right from the start. I'm sorry if you misunderstood. :)
